Business Smart Tools conference wrap-up

Well, it was quite a good conference. As I mentioned in Tuesday’s post, I did some “live blogging,” which means I typed furiously as speakers talked, and hit “publish” when they were done.

I did those on the Creative Concepts blog, instead of here, however.

But here are the links for those posts, for your perusing convenience. Remember, these are my notes of the talks, so take that into account. These are summaries, not transcripts.

I must say I was a bit disappointed in David Pogue’s keynote speech. Not in the presentation, because he’s a great speaker, but in the content. It seemed to me that he spent too much time on the perceived negatives of blogs. I say perceived, because I don’t think he gave the full picture, just his understanding of the blogosphere. His examples were all news or political blogs, such as Gawker, Wonkette, and the like. I don’t know if he’s looked much at business blogs, or even topical blogs, such as Lifehacker, a blog about technology and productivity.

David Parmet asked him about other blogs, such as TechCrunch. Pogue hadn’t heard of it. Now, if you’re just a regular person, that’s understandable. But if you’re a techie, or a technology writer, that’s not a good sign.

You can read a summary of what he said in the on-line article written by Richard Lee, of the Stamford Advocate: Blogs, podcasts: Are they friends or foes?

“If it bleeds, it leads,” I guess.

Update 6/17/07 : Check out the comments for David Pogue’s reply and Ann Marie Brucia’s view of what she got out of the conference. Did I over-react to the negatives? I was concerned that his talk might scare people off, but Ann Marie wasn’t, so maybe I’m wrong?

“His examples were all news or political blogs, such as Gawker, Wonkette, and the like.”

Well, as I noted in the talk: These are the blogs that get the most press, the ones that the average person is most likely to have heard of, the ones with the most influence.

Given that my assigment was to provide a general overview, an introduction to the blogosphere, I didn’t think those were unreasonable examples. I’m guessing that the TechCrunch guy is NOT among those invited to White House briefings and courted by the people who run the country… :)

Thanks for stopping by! I really enjoy your columns, videos, newsletters, podcasts. You definitely “get” the new media.

But when you say “…the blogs that get the most press…,” that’s part of my point.

There’s much more to the blogosphere than is dreamt of in most people’s philosophies. Everyone in the MSM (”that would be y’all”)looks at the so-called influential blogs, the ones that get the most press. I think there are many more out there that, in the aggregate, reach and influence more people than the ones you mentioned.

It just all seems like a Catch-22 to me.

I attended the Business Smart Tools Conference and I made this comment during the panel discussion. First of all I thought he was extremely entertaining….the content was interesting and the delivery grand. I took from his presentation a clear understanding and examples to use going forward in illustrations with my clients the type of power that this “medium” in new media has.

I felt it illustrated perfectly the concept of “power” that this space has. Although the end result result that he used was negative, the challenge or otherwise opportunity will be channeling this medium for our selves, our clients and our message for a more desired or positive end result.

  4. Sabine Says:

I agree Ann, it was an entertaining presentation.
And you’re right about the potential “power,” for good or bad, that the new media has.

Maybe it was just me — it sounds like you got out of it exactly what I was hoping people would get out of it.

Sabine. Congratulations on winning by finding the hidden clue on my page.

Your site looks wonderful. I’ve only been blogging 4 months and there is so much I don’t know. I am bookmarking your site and will return here.

    Blessings,

    Shirley

Thanks, Shirley! That was a clever place to put the clue, and a clever idea of Liz’s.
I need more reminders to read the comments on a post — I get lazy some times and don’t click on the comments link, and then I miss the good stuff!
