Bringing blogging to your business!
Well, I don’t have the heart to subject anyone to a long screed on trackbacks (as I threatened to do in my last post about an introduction to trackbacks), especially on a Monday morning when I’m running late.
But here’s a few more tid-bits.
This is what a trackback will look like in WordPress, using as an example a trackback from a post from Liz of Successful Blog.
In my blog, trackbacks are mixed in with the regular comments. In others, such as Steve Rubel’s Micro Persuasion, they are separated.
Note how Steve has a separate URL for trackbacks. This is how trackbacks look and work in Typepad blogs.
In most blog applications, such as WordPress, you need to enter that URL in the “trackbacks” section of the Write Posts interface. Then the linked to post will be pinged by yours. I’m not doing that for this post, because mine isn’t really about the subject of his post.
Finally, there’s another good basic explanation about trackbacks in the Conservative Cat blog.

This image of a trackback in action is from that blog, showing how trackbacks also work for your own posts. In fact, they’re a good idea — creating links from one of your posts to another helps readers by giving them more related information and context, and helps you by keeping older posts “alive.”

I know I’m supposed to understand this - and when I read it I do - but when I go ‘home’ its
all turned to mush!
I will persevere however!

That’s the spirit, Heather!
I think that part of the confusion is that trackbacks are very unevenly supported by different blogging applications at the moment. WordPress does a great job with trackbacks for other WordPress blogs, but I have to find the trackback link for other blogs myself and put it in the WordPress trackback field.
I’m always forgetting to do that until days later.
